Definitely an interesting and different story. I was unsure of what was going on at first, but once I had read it to the end, it made more sense. Using an alternative location, not sticking with the norms, made for a nice change of pace. You should attempt to right a collection of short stories around this prompt, because I believe that if you do, you could probably create a nice selection of stories.
Wow! Definitely a powerful story, a thought provoking one. The way you compared the emotional feelings to that of being trapped, and being unable to escape from these thoughts. I really enjoyed it. Same with the symbolism of the chains, being seen as what holds you down when you just want to be set free. The amount of metaphoric language and analogies that you used in this story were amazing, clear and relatable. All the makings of a good story!!!
‘For far too long now, have I felt nothing but the melancholy, the longing for days gone by.’ Is it supposed to be ‘I have’ instead of ‘have I’, because the latter doesn’t sound quite right.
The last line, ‘My future awaits...’ was a great finisher, because it left me, the reader, curious as to what the main characters next step will be.
