Sometimes it's our children who teach us the meaning of love
Look with your eyes.
Feel deeply with your heart.
Walk wisdom’s pathways
Mind open from the start.

We all seek our purpose
While life fans our flame,
Looking for our soul mates
Grim loneliness to tame.

What constitutes family?
Veiled borders are unclear.
Doors need to be opened
With knowledge, not fear.

Lifestyles are different
Not all are understood.
You can't label some bad
And say others are good.

My oldest son is gay.
But what does that matter?
With the strength of our love
Our family won't shatter.

My second child is gay.
A tomboy from the start,
With a sensitive soul
Nestled deep in her heart.

My third is yet anxious.
Straight, he battles to see.
I know he still worries,
"Will they think it of me?"

My youngest, my baby,
Also straight as an arrow
Has some understanding,
And some views more narrow.

What horror rejection!
Can you yet feel their strife?
Banished from their families
Denied love for life.

Don't add to their anguish,
Hug sad worries away.
Gently wipe frightened tears,
Tell them your love will stay.

Life is a mystery,
And you never quite know
What lessons it will demand
Or what curves it will throw.

People are just people
And none should you defame
Because deep down inside
All our wants are the same.

Accept what is given.
Stop the hate, let it cease.
For love is the answer,
And will bring about peace.

My children are all different.
Their hearts my reality.
Freeing me from my box,
Love producing the key.
