Hannah's First Joke

Hannah's first joke was a good one. It humbled any ideas I may have had about intellectual superiority of adults over kids.

My son, Joe, was saying that he couldn't get Hannah to pronounce the word 'tomato.' She could say a few new words quite clearly, like 'apple,' and I was sure I could teach her to say 'tomato.'

I held a freshly picked tomato that Joe had handed me and said,"Look, Hannah, say the name of this tomato from Daddy's garden."

I repeated slowly," Toah...Mayee..Toah...-
Toah...Mayee...Toah..."

Hannah repeated each syllable slowly clearly as I pronounced them. I'm fairly sure she already knew she could say 'tomato.'

I then said, " Now say 'tomato',all together."

She looked up at me with a grin, said 'apple,' and then toddled away.
