A poem of abuse

I'm sitting in the closet,
The screaming has begun,
I don't know what to do,
I don't know where to run.

I know it won't be long,
Before the rage is turned to me,
She doesn't mean to do it,
But I wish that she could see.

I know she was trying to defend me,
But it doesn't do any good,
It makes him beat me more,
If she could help I know she would.

So I hide here in the closet,
soon he'll come for me,
I can only dream about the future,
About how good life can really be.

I hear him in my room now,
So now it's time to go,
I'll be thinking about a better life,
With every painful blow.
