A sense of loss of a world in war...
The stranger saw the candle--
flaming from his perch in the woods
Walking to the window,
he felt the cold autumn wind
To his astonishment no one was there
He wondered if she really cared
Then he saw her figure sitting by the fire
Still ,warm, and inviting object of desire
He rocked back and forth...the same old rhythm,
But he could not join her
Her eyes drifted to a picture on the mantel
A picture of a lost soldier,
"PFC Carlson" was captioned on the bottom.
The stranger nodded and smiled,
a tear streamed down his face.
He turned and walked back to the road.
She was startled by his steps
not knowing it was him leaving
she thought it was a creature on the porch
when she opened the door,
she found something on the porch floor
a name woven in a cotton patch, "Carlson."
