This is a poem about feeling trapped
It is 2:30 in the morning and
I wake up again,
The room on fire.
I fight the urge to run
To find the unmarked door.

Again the dragon rears her head
And breathes down my neck
As the phoenix flies overhead.
The tip of her wing
Catches fire.
I dream this time that I jump on her strong back,
Barely breathing,
Blowing out hard, but
Taking only small sips
Of evaporating air.

I thought I had found a good place to hide
Between the dragon and the phoenix.
There is so much life
In mythical creatures.
But the heat makes
My skin boil.
And wakes me,
Longing to escape.
