Insatiable appetites must be fed.
The last bite of my most recent prey
was typical in its inability
to live up to the first.
My thoughts were already chewing
on a new meal,
one that would surely
make me happy to be so fat.

This time a car
when that time a house.
What good is a three car garage
if one bay is to remain empty?
Then, of course, I need a fence.
Something tall and dense.
It is a nice neighborhood,
but it seems so much nicer
over there where the children
play and never seem to get dirty.
Then we'd be a good distance away
from the duplexes, from whence we came,
and quickly found it so easy
to snicker at.
We were happy then, weren't we?
So much to dream about,
and so much time to dream.

I'm sure we will be that happy again
once all those dreams are attained.
Remember how sad we once were,
about all the time apart?
I told you. You didn't believe me
that it would get easier.
Here we are though.
Hardly ever together,
and barely speaking when we are.
It's grown that comfortable
to be away from each other.

You know, in just two more years
of life like this
we will finally be able to afford
the bigger house than your sister
with the bigger yard than your folks
and host barbecues for our friends.
Don't worry. The parties won't be
that much work.
We have so few friends left now
that it will hardly seem like feeding
more than just ourselves.
Maybe I'll get some of those
Kobe beef hot dogs.
You know my boss swears
they really are the best.

Well, I really need to be off.
I just spotted the perfect Lexus
to put in your parking spot.
Surely, once it's yours,
you will have forgiven me
for not driving with you anymore
to waste another day in the country.
Next week, we'll have dinner.
Some place nice.
I should be getting a bonus check.
Think of the wine.
It will help.
