About my daughter's friend. Her mom is an alcoholic. She's in foster care now.
Ashley's Eyes

Eyes like a lion,
wild spirit,
locked inside.
A sadness
in her heart,
a scar she tries to hide.
Sometimes she forgets,
and lets her spirit go,
then we see behind her eyes,
a light begin to glow.

"Invalid Item is a follow up to Ashley's Eyes. Written for a contest using a propmpt, Ashley's mom was my inspiration. It is heartbreaking to see all that she is going through and to be so totally helpless to do anything about it. I know that someone who lives like this doesn't do so willingly, even though it is hard to imagine why she continues to imprison herself the way she does. As for Ashley, she has been in a wonderful foster home for the last several years and has matured into a beautiful young lady. Even though her early life was difficult and I am sure it still pains her, knowing what her mother is going through, I have no doubt she will succeed in all she does.
