Wondering if horses appreciate their environment . . .
HORSES AND THE CLOUDS
June 7, 2006

Do horses wonder at the clouds
that graze in sun-lit
skies in herds of Camargue-
creams and greys

that neigh in fits of
showers where black
herds stampede above
their heads and bring
the wind to mess their manes
and puddle in their beds?

Do they see them buck and rear
and carry-on in treeless
paddocks where they could never
roam across an airy lawn?

Do horses jump to
touch those clouds
and bump their eager
polls against the
vaprous tails
caught in tangled
caprioles?

Do they marvel
at the cumulus gilded
bright at molten dusk
across the muscly edges
before the stars
come graze at night?
