This poem is about a soldier who has died and how he saw devastation around him.
Fallen Soldier

While I walk down the road I reflect, why am I here?
This strange place where the sun is hot and dust is clearing.

I am ready to fight as I carry my rifle on my shoulder
Passing the strangers as I meet my unit near the hill.

My body is weak and my eyes grow tired, so tired
My eyes have seen poverty, death and sorrow.

Mangled bodies along the road has death in it's path
Some being children disguised in a man's body.

Rolling thunder heard in the sky as the bombs fell
Too many men, too many lives as they walked through hell

Presidents, generals trying to create a new spirit of cooperation
Forming part of a bigger tapestry of super-power relations

This road seems endless while I prepare for battle
The danger zone approaches as does the enemy.

I did not choose to be here, but I have nowhere to go
I will walk towards the gun fire and flashes of light in the sky.

The light that I see is so serene and it envelopes me
Where am I? The battlefield is behind me and I am lost.

A friend approaches and whispers that I follow him
As he states "You and I do not belong here, walk towards the light".

Again he whispers that their job is finished and they cannot
follow the men into battle, as our battle is done.

I will see them again but not on this earth.
A new life begins.
