Hard times for a mother alone.
She reminds me
of my grandmother
who spent much of her childhood
in a Texas orphanage

The hard eyes
wrinkled face
tight lips

Dusty clothes
food and shelter scarce
Try to keep going
For her children

Tired of crying
No hope in sight
The dust bowl has driven her
to walk endlessly
on the road
