This butterfly has become a family heirloom
Dunk Island butterfly

BUTTERFLY

Six hand spans wide and she's made of wood,
She's never flown and she never could.

I remember the butterfly in days of old
At my Nana's house, she was black and gold.
She was poised as in flight above the door,
'Til my Nana grew tired and breathed no more.

Six hand spans wide and she's made of wood,
She came to my Mum's, Nana knew she would.

She was painted afresh in black and green,
Majestically hovering, to be seen
Beside the door. I saw her each time I passed,
And she kept watch 'til Mum breathed her last.

Six hand spans wide and she's made of wood,
She appeared at my home, as Mum knew she would.

My butterfly is painted now black and blue,
Like a Dunk Island beauty -- a tropical hue.
She greets all who visit and there is no doubt
She'll remain there so gracefully, 'til my torch goes out.

Six hand spans wide and she's made of wood,
She will pass to my daughter as I know she should.

My only daughter will be honoured to show
This treasure passed down from a time long ago.
May the spirit of our butterfly last forever, I pray,
For some time in the future, my grand daughter will say,

Six hand spans wide and she's made of wood,
She'd tell wondrous stories, if only she could.
