This is my latest work..I wrote it last night. Please do tell me what you think.
Jacob’s like most other kids,
Who have gone through a divorce.
His only choice is to run a race,
Where he doesn’t know the course.

He’s called me Poppa since he could speak,
And his Mimi is my wife.
I must admit that he’s become,
Quite the highlight in our life.

We’ve seen him start to make the  climb,
Until their traps are sprung.
All caught up in their war of words,
They knock him down a rung.

He slips and falls, then climbs again,
He never lets us down.
So we make sure, that we secure,
The bottom to the ground.

His mom and dad fuss and fight,
They can't seem to comprehend.
That every rung they knock him down,
Was one he climbed for them.

He struggles each and every day,
He wonders what to do.
Its hard to be a five year old,
And be your parent too.

At Poppa’s house he knows that he,
Can climb without a fear.
‘cause its one place, that’s always safe,
That’s why he loves it here.

We try to teach him how to climb,
And pray he doesn’t slip.
With all the things we say and do,
To strengthen up his grip.

To see him make it to the top,
Not much could make me gladder.
‘cause through the years, I’ve been right here,
Building Jacob’s ladder.
