KISSING IN THE RAIN

Young lovers walking on a quiet street
in the early morning hours, pausing,
unaware of the soft rain falling,
stopping to embrace, kissing in the rain
as dawn lifts the sun from its slumber.

A voyeur unintended, looking out the window
just to check on the weather, preparing for the day,
I was drawn to the couple, barely breathing,
whisked back to my own yesterday's love.
I once was in love like you, I thought.

Soft rains fell and mingle with salty kisses
as I stood beside him in the dawn of a different day.
He was leaving, I was grieving - a soldier's wife,
facing the uncertainty with him one last time
before he boarded the plane - I kissed him in the rain.

Brave young lovers following their dreams,
sharing the solitude of each others arms,
walking on together as more memories surfaced.
I turned from the window letting my gaze
fall upon the framed picture of a fallen soldier.

For a moment time had stood still and
perhaps had slipped backwards to another time
when soft rains fell and I felt the touch of lips
upon my own, when love was new,
and dreams were bright within our hearts.
