A poem written at some distance from the end of a significant relationship. February 2007.
Even now I struggle to conceive
That you could be anything but starlight.
But then, we never break starlight down
To its constituent fire and nuclear pain.

It's a novel thought when I reflect
Perhaps you are motivated by pique.
It's iconoclastic to believe
You capable of self-deception.

I think I try to defend you from myself
For fear of hating you. But distance
From your starlight, out of your blaze
Allows me to examine you with science.
