A mini story about a lonely tree inspired by the scenery through a train window...
The Lonely Tree

To either side the trees were clustered,
deep in conversation so it seemed.
As their leaves blustered they appeared to snigger-
or so it seemed to him, the lonely tree.

He stood alone no friends to talk to and watched the others chat away.
'What is it?' he thought, 'is there something wrong with me?'
But the birds would make their nests in the safety of his branches and
Squirrels tickled him as they played.
Yet still his peers, they stayed away.

Sadly he watched the seasons changing,
the safety of leaves vanished and reappeared.
Then one quiet day in gentle sunshine,
a little girl came and sat beside him.
'I thought you seemed lonely' said the girl to the tree.
'So I've bought you a friend, just be patient you'll see.

She pulled out a trowel and dug a wee hole,
then planted a sapling and wandered off home.

The sapling shouted 'hello! in a sweet little voice
and the lonely tree cried, such was his delight.
A tree voice at last. He smiled away,
but speechless, he paused, he had so much to say!

So, never again was the lonely tree lonely.
He chattered all day while the sapling it grew.
And the sapling was happy that this wise old elder
had so much time for ‘little wee me!’
