The sun, the rain and the wind

A Heat-Wave Afternoon

The asphalt burns my sneakered feet
on a summer's afternoon,
heat-waves rising up to meet
the rain that's coming soon.

Eggs are frying on the concrete,
I think they're almost done,
it seems the heat cannot be beat
and the battle isn't won.

I squint my eyes against the sun,
shade's where I want to be,
but there's no place for me to run,
no place for me to flee.

Refreshing is the breeze that moves
to cool the sweat of day.
A little touch of heaven soothes,
to chase this heat away.

The softest winds blow fresh and cool,
gentle fingers to the brow.
Raindrops in a futile duel,
thunder-heads are on the prowl.

Lightning bolts and lightning flashes,
then daylight turns to night,
as a storm cloud's thunder crashes
in nature's fire-fight.

So in the end the storm will leave
this sunny day in June,
and I'll enjoy a slight reprieve
from a heat wave afternoon.
