Dedicated to my 83-year old sister whose remaining life is spent in a nursing home

THE LIGHT THAT STILL SHINES

There dwells within the soul a light
that shines through the darkest of times,
a light that lit the way for your life
and I know that the light still shines.

The ravages of age have taken their toll,
you no longer remember yesterdays past;
you no longer remember our names, or the
dreams that you once thought would last.

You lived your life with courage and grace
and made a difference in so many lives.
the children raised to stand on their own,
to grow into good husbands and wives.

You molded character in your students
as you taught them more than ABC's;
Many years later they remember you
taking time for each one with such ease.

When it was time to retire, to enjoy
all the things that you wanted to do,
you still found the strength to work,
to let your light keep shining through.

Living was fun, you basked in the sun
of the love of your family and friends,
Humor and song helped you along
but it wasn't how your story ends.

You started forgetting, and were afraid
of what might lie ahead, you were cross.
Nightmares became your reality then
and we who love you still feel the loss.

The day had to come, life over and done,
as you were taken to a nursing home.
The hardest thing for the children then
was leaving you there, lost and alone.

There was no cure for destiny's lure
as the spark of your life fluttered out;
still somewhere within, a hint of a grin
showed you knew what it was about.

It's many long years and so many tears
as we watch you slowly fading away,
we try to hold on to the YOU that was;
"goodbye" is such a hard word to say.

One day God will call you back home
and the Heavens will open up wide
to let a soul such as yours come in
and angels will welcome you inside.

There dwells within the soul a light
that shines through the darkest of times,
a light that lit the way for your life
and I know that the light still shines.

Dedicated to my "big sister" Alma June
on her 83rd Birthday
