Trying to catch this flower when it is out in full bloom is not easy
DOG TOOTHED VIOLET

There were only four of us that headed out that day
Three in a car and one that biked along the way
The dog toothed violet, a wonder we must see
Also known to most as the yellow trout lily

We walked along the path that followed the water
The adventure we were on, the bugs were no bother
Many red trilliums here and more on the other side
Sometimes called Stinking Benjamin, a name I can’t abide

We trudged on, and suddenly noticed a new flower
A little plant in the big woods, but it did not cower
It stood tall with its single pale yellow little bell
We all just looked at it as if we were in a spell

Down the hill we went looking left and right
At everything we could, not missing a sight
Many plants, lots of trees, moss and things
Everything to look at and the pleasure it brings

Around the bend before the next rise
Amazed at the sight that met our eyes,
It definitely was as they said it would be
The dog toothed violet was a wonder to see

It covered the ground like a yellow blanket
Around the base of the trees it went
It spread out as far as the eye could see
Aren’t you glad you went with me
