This may sound an every-day, every-woman experience. But this is different..
The Little Red Shoes by Thushari Wasana Nanayakkara

I cruised at a speed of a racing snail
Pausing to admire what shops displayed
While I day-dreamed in dummy worn gowns,
With all the trimmings that would cost a crown
People rushed at a miraculous speed,
Rustling skirts and clicking their heels

When I stopped at ‘Minty’s – The Shoes’,
I held my breath, for my eyes were glued!
My lips curved, softening my eyes
And with excitement did they shine!

Oh, those darling little red shoes!!

Red as a ripened fresh cherry,
As shiny as Rudolph’s little nose,
So elegant with a bow of crochet silver,
And a pearly button to top it all!

I felt my purse and checked the price
Being so sure, I had that much in coins
But suddenly I sighed, as it dawned that I couldn’t
For a landmine swapped my limbs to wooden

Slowly as I turned the wheel of my chair,
Breathing the aroma baker spread through the air,
I painfully stole one last look
At the little red shoes I will never wear

A world free of landmines?  Say NO to violence. Say NO to War
