The Pain of War. An Old Poem of Mine.
The Lighting of the Candle

Nearing the destruction of a desolate land,
Aid and care workers, give out a helping hand.
To free a country, of poverty and deprivation,
To give to the needy, to rebuild a nation.

It’s hard not to weep as you look at their condition,
People dying everywhere from foreign ammunition.
Struggling to survive, without any food or water,
A whimpering mum crying over her dead daughter.

The look in their eyes creates a hole in your heart,
A grief stricken father, pushing an empty cart.
The fear in their movements, brings you into a new world,
A family dives to the floor, as a grenade is hurled.

A strong, brave son tries to hide his emotions,
With gathered courage recites his devotions,
Yet he drops to the ground, as tears fall from his eyes,
Can’t help but listen to his parents cries.

He realises his fate and hopes for the best,
For his family and friends and all of the rest.
He attempts to keep going, ignore the pain,
Yet it overwhelms him, he sees the blood stain.

Finally he gives up, lies down to die.
He’s mother moves over and continues to cry.
The pain of war, is too much to handle,
So now we remember them, with the lighting of this candle.
