Bonanza on Sundays

We watched Bonanza on Sundays.
I always liked Adam the best,
even then having a penchant
for dark, sexy men who would leave.

Mom slipped whiskey in her tea when
we watched Bonanza on Sundays,
the sweet, smoky lapsang souchong
smelling like my Dad's aftershave.

His scent lingered after he left,
rising off the couch cushions as
we watched Bonanza on Sundays.
I kept his comb in my pocket.

If I hear that corny theme song
my chest will shudder and tighten
against the loss long held at bay.
We watched Bonanza on Sundays.
