When icy winds in a cold, dark, black night dampen the spirits, His voice soothes.
WHEN NIGHT IS DARK AND BLACK AND COLD

When night is dark and black and cold
And icy winds do blow,
When gnawing hunger bites inside
And the spirits are low;

When sleep forsakes and sleepless eyes
Are reddish and swollen,
When hands shiver and teeth chatter
One has no clothes woolen;

When fires of hell seem better than
Freezing on earth in snow,
When no one is nearby to call
And no place where to go;

Then one surrenders to Him and
Hears a distant music
That soothes the very soul and brings
Calm amidst all panic.

His voice, as if in a whisper,
Gives succor to the soul.
The sagging spirits rise up and
The broken heart is whole.
