A short poem/prose written about drifting apart from a close friend.
Two Lost Souls

The face in the mirror
appears foreign to him.
His identity has
slowly shifted,
to the state where
all those from the past
are presently strangers.
The dullness in his eyes
shows the void in his life.
He smiles at the embrace,
temporarily feeling the warmth
of years passed.
When did it come to this?
Once, so connected,
neither could survive
without the other's sustainment;
now, two lost souls,
solitarily suffering.
Each attempting to
find a precise place in life,
yet each realizing
there is no such thing.
The separate, beaten paths
have led to nothing
but longing and regret.
One knows only
the path one takes;
how is one to say
which bearing suits others?
Just ahead, each worn
and washed-out road reads,
"Dead End."
The pair venture
down a road less traveled;
the two lost souls
find comfort as
their paths cross
once again...
