Recording by Chuck Williams New disc " Stories I've Told " - - - Hard Road -- track #6.
" Hard Road "

I'm rollin' down a hard road
with my diesel engine wound,
and this heavy haulin' truckload
is North Dakota bound.

The thunder clouds off to the west
are blacker than the night.
There's a diner at the next hill's crest,
off the shoulder, to the right.

chorus
Coast to coast, this country's big,
there's miles to unwind
but when I climb into this rig
the hard road's all I'll find.

Back and forth a million miles,
across the great divide,
I think I'll stop and rest awhile,
fatigue is hard to hide.

I was born to run the highway,
to chase the thin white line,
and destiny has marked my way;
it's printed on a sign.

chorus
Coast to coast, this country's big
the miles aren't too kind
and when I climb into this rig
I've left someone behind.

On a long haul up the canyon
I know what's round the bend
she's my lover and companion
in the last dance at the end.

Now when the road will let me be,
when I've run that one last mile,
the hard road then will set me free;
and I'll leave her with a smile.

chorus
Coast to coast this country's big
the miles aren't to kind
and when I climb into this rig
I've left someone behind.
