Control and loss. Three vignettes. Revision of "Hungry, yet unwilling to let go"
DON'T LEAVE

1.

"I don't need you" she said,
gripping the stem of her wine glass,
as she begs for another argument
to remind her she is alive.

"Don't Leave" she said,
closing her fist tightly around the wedding ring
afraid of letting go, losing him, losing herself.
One day, she looked in his eyes and he was gone.

2.

"You are my world", he said,
building a glass case around her
to display his possessions,
but her world cannot survive without oxygen.

"Don't leave" he said,
grasping the gentle curve of her shoulders,
but he was holding a mere shell
and she was already in the heart of another.

3.

"We're disappointed", they said,
holding the keys to the mangled car,
afraid of letting go, losing him, losing their marriage,
but children cannot mend two broken hearts.

"Don't leave" they said,
holding captive the keys to his freedom.
So afraid they were losing him to drugs or drink,
they didn't see him as he silently slipped away.
