A WOUNDED HEART

Mixing with the shifting sands, a wounded heart
leaves its life-blood as a grim reminder of war,
of man's inhumanity to man; one life ebbs away.
Death stalks the battlefield, still looking for more.

Yet life goes on, in the bitter quest for victory.
Another falls; the deaths not to be forgotten by
the soldiers who push on toward the enemy lines.
The winds will continue to echo their battle cry.

The battle over, each side carries their own away.
For some an unmarked grave, for some flown home
in a flag-covered casket; listen for the sound of Taps
and a gun salute as family grief becomes a moan.

A mother weeps, a wife holds her children closer
and a father stands alone lest the tears be seen.
Each one will know the pain of a wounded heart
that they will struggle for many years to redeem.
