Written for a friend who just lost his wife, a former Army nurse
WOUNDED SOLDIER, ARMY NURSE

Life is filled with strange twists and turns
as each one of us in this lifetime learns.
He was injured in combat with a tanker crew,
An Army nurse's healing helped him through.

A bond was formed those many years ago
from the days in Korea. Somehow, although
they were separated by duty, still kept in touch
for caring and respect meant so very much.

He returned home to his wife and family.
The war ended for him, he was finally free
of the scars of battle, buried in his mind.
To tell the truth of war would be unkind.

Letters from the nurse over several years
helped him relive the bloodshed and tears.
They grew close as friends, without a doubt,
he was finally able to let the heartache out.

She was there when his wife passed away,
giving support and courage to live another day.
Their marriage, a beacon of light for twenty years,
ended all too soon, and brought fresh tears.

Yet at night, when he looks up at the evening star
and whispers her name, she smiles down from afar.
Her light and love keeps shining through it all,
giving him strength to go on until he hears the call.

He was a soldier, she was an Army nurse -
and when things got tough, could not be worse,
they stood together and made it though the pain;
knowing that someday they'd be together again.

God bless them both...
