FIRST LOVE
a one minute play

CHARACTERS

BILLY: 13 years old. Seventh grader. Has a crush on Jessica.

JESSICA: 13 years old. Seventh grader. Has a crush on Billy.



Setting: JESSICA'S living room. BILLY and JESSICA are sitting at opposite ends of the couch, staring out towards the audience as if watching the television.

BILLY

Good movie, isn't it?


JESSICA

Yeah, I really like it. It's nice. [Pause] Billy?


BILLY

Yeah?


JESSICA

I really like... [is about to say "you," but stops herself] this. The movie, I mean. It's nice. [Pause] Would you like some more popcorn? [Exits]


BILLY

[Calling after her] Yeah, sure?

[While JESSICA is getting popcorn, BILLY checks his breath, smells his armpits, etc. JESSICA re-enters with a bowl of popcorn, trips, and spills the popcorn all over BILLY]


JESSICA

[While brushing BILLY off, ad lib] Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry... [etc]


BILLY

It's okay. [Long pause] Soo...


JESSICA: Usually with a needle and thread! [Laughs, then realizes BILLY doesn't get the joke] You know... you usually sew with a needle and thread?


BILLY

[Forces laugh] Yeah, that's really funny.


[Pause]


JESSICA

Soo...


BILLY

Yeah?


JESSICA

Nothing.


BILLY

Oh... okay.


[Pause]


JESSICA

So, Scarlett Johanssen's really pretty.


BILLY

Yeah, you're... SHE's really pretty.


[Pause as JESSICA realizes what BILLY has just said]


JESSICA

You really think so?


BILLY

Yeah. SHE'S really pretty.


[Another long pause, during which, after much fidgeting, BILLY and JESSICA end up holding hands]


JESSICA

I really like this movie.


BILLY

I like it too.
