Does the Muse, organic as it is, really want us to prune the message with form and meter?
Shag Bark Pruning

The hickory will drop its seed astray,
the overstatement of its need to splay.
A nut will fall and ricochet,
and make a mess of my deck today.

A while ago I would have chopped the tree,
It would have been a fait accompli,
but form and meter always disagree,
and thus the tree is not an amputee.

And up above the mess it made,
the birds and squirrels carry on their trade.
And we love its lovely shade, so let
the tree trash our promenade!
