How i felt the first time i saw West Virginia
Mist-wrapped morning mountains
hills in deep thinking
wearing their tattered shawls they wait for dawn
patient as only earth can be.
The hills have been waiting for me
as if I have only been away from home.
Green blushing greets me
even the grass is glad I've come.
It is easy to feel here
easy to breathe
easy to be.
Tears and joy in the same air
my soul feeds on the lightness of it.
My eyes are gladdened by the morning that spills through the passes
over the newly wakeful birds
reaching gently down river valleys.
Laughing water plays over shale and slate pebles
singing light into my heart.
The world is ablaze and carries me along in mad happy rushes.
I am a child again wandering the pathways and deer runs
pulled by the promise of  just around the bend.
