A 'haunting time for a young child'. I had to write outside 'quatrains' - my comfort zone.
After dark they leer down at me,
Ignoring frantic fervent plea,
They're still grinning at half-past three.

Yellow luminous bits of bite,
Once perfect smile of pearly white -
Now dark denizens of the night.

Plump invite for them – that's my neck,
Ten little toes also they check,
My body parts at call and beck!

How can I then my mother tell,
Although I know it very well -
It is Grandpa who casts the spell?

When eventide has come to pass,
He does this deadly deed, alas -
puts his dentures into a glass!

Lurking within, all magnified,
Gleaming in wicked smile so wide;
My thudding heart turns out-inside.

Please give him his very own room!
Or he can fly off on his broom -
His teeth shan’t haunt me to my doom.
