a poem about becoming a mother
Blood Test

Blood blooms upwards
From where the needle pierces taut skin.
Her head turns away.
She does not fear the stinging pain.
Only the sight of blood,
Makes her eyes glaze over, cool and grey.
They said the word BABY;
Such a tiny word makes her heart
Freeze--they test for illness.
She never knew what it meant to be
A mother. Never cared
For hers either. Now she is the light.
Now she is someone else’s heart longing.
She is life and love.
She is the one who can do no wrong.
