A look at the seven clans of the Cherokee people
Every culture has their ways
Beliefs and customs to guide their lives.
Stemming from Ancient Cherokee days
Seven clans were formed to insure they’d survive.

The Blue Clan strove to learn the clue
To keep their people healthy and whole.
One day from a plant, with a hue of blue,
A medicine was made that fit the goal.

Wearing their hair in long tradition
The Wind Clan walked tall with pride.
Sometimes vanity became the fuel of ignition
But the Peace Chief took it all in stride.

The Bird Clan was surely quite aptly named
For birds, their life revolved around.
With blowguns, their skills were clearly aimed
And the snares they set did quickly abound.

The Paint Clan clearly dealt with colors
Of which red was primarily used.
Paint for the weapons and the warriors
As well as paint for the sick and bruised.

The Deer Clan were ever swift to run
Quickly and quietly in their hunt.
“Keepers of the deer” they were never outdone
For all were united in a common front.

The Bear Clan were protectors; keepers of the people.
In so doing they were, of necessity, also warriors.
Highly regarded was the bear, who provided food most ample
And clothing as well for it’s two-legged neighbors.

The Wolf Clan were the largest by far.
Providing most of the tribe’s war chiefs.
Keepers of the wolf they were and are,
Following closely to their beliefs.
