A Native American poem about how the Finger Lakes of western New York State were formed.

Where the Oak and Hemlock stand
our mother earth was torn.
A single swipe of one great hand
was how the lakes were born.

Great Spirit spread his hand out wide
upon the flattened earth,
and let his mighty fingers slide
to give the lakes their birth.

The waters of the springs and streams
would fill them all the way
like slender jewels from our dreams;
the Finger Lakes would lay.

The native sons would cast a glance
upon these sacred shores,
they'd listen to the spirits dance
in peaceful, lyric scores.

So as the ancient story's told,
passed down in Shaman lore
Nature's beauty will unfold
on and on;
from shore to shore.
