A smile upon a summer's day
Eliza

A smile upon a summer’s day
A scudding cloud across clear blue
A butterfly amongst the flowers
Eliza, Maori girl, it’s you.

Laughter in the swirling stream
A cresting wave upon the sea
A leaping fish on rippled pond
Eliza, Maori girl, you’re free.

Sparkling in a firework spray
A moon’s embrace of stars at night
A luminescent glow within the heart
Eliza, full of life’s delight.

But all is so very quickly spent.
Youth’s fair face gives way to gradual age.
Its lines cut deep by life’s defeats
The weathered storms, the courage to endure
The satisfaction of a life well lived
Goals achieved, the elder sage.
Eliza, Maori girl, your life’s a treat
Unfold it!
Savor!
Eat!
