WOMEN AND SEA: a sonnet


Why compare a woman to the sea?
Because they share comparable traits
Woman, tempestuous can sure she be
When she is angry on one whom she hates.

Women’s eyes can be unfathomable.
They have a gaze that is too sharp and deep.
They can, like sea, be uncontrollable.
They shed salty tears when they cry and weep.

Of this fact all men are too well informed:
Both can be calm and furious at times.
“Hell has no fury like a woman scorned”,
Thus wrote Congreve about feminine crimes.

Though men may claim they have mastered the sea,
Few would venture to say this of a she.

* Written for the “Stories of the Sea” Contest, "Invalid Item" , January 2010 Round, hosted by Happy 2024! , where the prompt was to write a poem regarding a sea.

* NOTE-- William Congreve (1670-1729) wrote the following lines in his play the "The Mourning Bride":
"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned
Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned."
