Being from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, I cherish the memories of many Groundhog Days past.
It’s Groundhog Day
February 2, 2010

Punxsutawney,  Pennsylvania
Along the Mahoning Creek
Anxiously awaits one big day each year,
February 2nd,
The day the Groundhog speaks.

Gobblers’ Nob at the crack of dawn
Crowds of people, try to stay warm.
Will he see his shadow?
Will there be more snow?
Only the Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil is the one to know.

Here comes the Inner Circle,
the men who know him best,
With top hats on their heads,
Bill, Mike, Steve, Butch, and the rest,
To drag him from his sleep and to put him to the test.

This morning, he emerged,
To find skies dark and gray.
But a ray of sun burst though those clouds
At 7:02, they say.

His shadow appeared on the ground.
Amazing, but it’s true.
He spoke to Ben in Groundhogese,
A language known by few.

Spring must wait  and I hibernate
Winter is not through.
And with these words, his work was done
And all the world now knew.

The prognosticator of prognosticators,
Headed back to bed,
See you in 6 weeks, is the last thing that he said.
And the sleepy little town of Punxsutawney,
Another year will wait.
To hear about the next spring and about the weather  fate.
