An inspirational poem based on The Yearling by Marjorie Kinan Rawlings.
The day was clear, shining sun
reflected light on the gun.
Stock to shoulder, aim to kill.
A racking sob stole his will.

He loved him so, no way out.
Compete for food left no doubt.
His mom had tried, bloody trail.
He had to end, could not fail.

He cannot look in his eye.
One who trusted now must die.
Squeeze the trigger, hear the crack.
The bullet's strength fills his lack.

The thunder boomed, raindrops fell.
This awful place feels like Hell.
Only fitting for a storm,
the way he felt so forlorn.

He'd run away, not return.
A hard lesson he must learn.
