A little girl's story of a very sad day.
My Daddy Came Home

“Why are you sad?” I asked my mom.
“Who are these men in uniform?”
She turned to me and with a voice so calm,
Said “They have a sacred duty to perform.”

Then time stood still as I clutched my doll.
The men talked for just a moment more.
They turned and left in silence, as I recall.
My daddy was finally coming home from the war.

Mother called my brother from our outside pool.
He did not smile as he walked up to me.
We stood together straight, as we did in school.
There was sorrow that I could see.

Daddy was a soldier who loved his family.
He smiled with pride as he watched us play.
He wanted to make our future worry free.
There was an inner call he could not delay.

Mother bit her lip and took a long, slow breath
She said that the letter was very clear.
Daddy got hurt one day, and it caused his death,
He died a hero and never showed any fear.

Now we have returned from saying goodbye.
My daddy is with other soldiers who loved us all.
The men he called brothers who with courage exemplify,
Our valiant men who heard freedom’s voice give them the call.

God bless all of those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will hold those who were lost in our hearts and memories.
But I would also like to say a special "Thank you" to everyone who served.
