Ambition sleeps for no mouse...a young one, anyway.

A kingdom through the hedgerow
young varmint's eyes did see
and dreamed about the bounty there,
the possibilities...

The elder mice gave scarce a thought
they ridiculed the need
to scavenge in some place away
and so it was agreed:

A million miles
A million miles
that hundred yards would seem
to tiny-footed rodents, such an open space was deemed

A danger zone
A danger zone
and death a certainty
to any foolish rodents who may exercise the scheme.

The open field,
the roaring stream,
the hill, the moat, the street--
and countless villains all inclined
a wayward mouse to eat.

Sanctuary
Sanctuary
Though that grass be green,
greener still right where you stand,
that town a silly dream.

Our hedgerow is a kingdom, too
and one that's ripe to feed
a mouse still young, a mouse still dumb
with ambitions we don't need.

A kingdom through the hedgerow
young varmint's eyes still see,
and dream about the bounty there,
the possibilities...
