What curse is it that lies beneath the skin?
Examine me from head to toe,
Take some notes and let me know,
What illness takes its hold on me?
What disease will not just let me be?
Look in my eyes, stale and dull,
Bagged and drooped inside my skull.
Prod my brain so trashed, so scattered.
Thoughts pass through, get beaten, battered.
Hear that voice ring through my ears,
Confirming all my wildest fears?
Flat-lined words spill off my tongue,
Artificial as my iron lung.
Now open my chest, you might be concerned,
Just solemn gray ash where a fire once burned.
Wobbling legs shan't support their frame,
My back is hunched with mournful shame.
Calloused feet and rotten toes,
A skeleton so filled with woes.
My soul is worn, exhausted, spun,
From living such, ten lives in one.
A hopeless case, I'll make my way
To suffer through another day.
