A storoem written for Countrymom's Senior Center Forum's poetry contest.
They first met when they both were sixteen.
Her family moved in the house next door.
He was waxing his car to a bright sheen.
At first sight, he’d love her forevermore.

He offered her a ride to their high school.
Rather smitten, he told her of his love.
“Though you think me bold and maybe a fool,
life-long lovers we’ll be, as I speak thereof.”

They dated, and, like he, she soon fell in love.
Their love burned bright with a flame so true
that they knew their love was sent from above.
Marriage, then college they intended to pursue.

The night of their senior prom started out fine.
Driving home afterwards, there came a storm.
He lost control, spun, and hit a large pine.
He lay hurt, soaked in his blood, red and warm.

She cradled his head in her lap and cried.
He said, “A lifetime together is not to be.
I wish you a happy life.” As he died,
“Find new love, but always … remember me.”
