Just an ordinary man that no one knew. Written for Writer's Cramp 10/3/10
No One Knew Jack

They didn’t know Jack, no one knew his face
He was lost in time, didn’t have a soul
Tried to fit in, didn’t know his place
Jack was a loner, no one made him whole

He lost his job, his house and wife
Had no idea where to turn, what to do
His mind grew warped, wanted to end his life
Needed to talk to someone, didn’t know who

He tried a psychiatrist; that was a mistake
All that did was run him further in debt
It seemed he just couldn’t get a break
His life was in a downward spiral, and yet

Perseverance was a strong suit for him
Giving up was not an option, no way
And just when his life seemed the most dim
The sun came out and brightened his day

Jack finally got settled, his life was on track
Found a new job that paid more than before
Met a new love, now there was no going back
He was quite happy, his spirits did soar

A routine visit to a doctor changed his life
For a quick checkup, he’d just turned forty one
The news wasn’t good, caused a lot of strife
At this young age, it seemed his life was done

But his love kept him going as each day passed
His body weakened slowly, no matter what he tried
Her true love held him, though he faded fast
One day she was left alone, the tears that she cried

Jack was just an average man, nothing more
He lived a normal life, knew sadness and joy
His last day on earth, he turned forty four
There was nothing left for him to enjoy

His big secret, something no one knew
He hated saying “goodbye”, “so long”, or “adieu”
On his tombstone was his epitaph, it was so true
“Here lies Jack, did anyone know you”

It was just an ordinary, dreary day
Not one of them wanted to hang around
They turned their backs and walked away,
As the coffin was lowered into the ground.
