The onset of a winter storm prompted me to write this.
Winter's raging force pushed the sun aside and
rain did somersaults in driveways.
Ghostly swings sway empty
as gusts push them high.

Wind swept leftover leaves and blew away
fall's colored frock.
Inside, a house light flickers - a signal;
some wire, somewhere, struggles to stay on.

Winter crashed through the night
with full force -
uninvited.

Snow piles high - fender bender havoc.

How dare the wind so bold
and cold, slap
and bite our faces with its sting!

Sometimes in frigid chills like these
we mourn
the absence of a summer island fed
with calming sea -
a remembrance of basking
on a shore's pleasured stillness

with only sounds of waves, and
in our minds we watch
sand crabs scurry off to
shady hiding places.

Winter came,
not
like a lamb.
