This was a poem I wrote when my first husband and I broke up.
Words, dry like deserts,
Crack and crush to dust.
I cough up a cloud of sand.
Can’t see you anymore.
It pours down my throat.
It gets in my blood.
It coats me.

Try to swallow. Choke.
Sand flows like words
Out my open mouth.
Sand drips like tears
Out my bloodshot eyes.
It swirls, angry,
And piles on the floor.

My flesh cracks like words
My body breaks to dust.
Words, words, words.
It's over.
