The Last Breath

11th May 2001

I sit here in the dark,
Watching the last spark,
Of your life ebb away,
It’s not a peaceful sight,
As you lay dying in the night,
Never to see another day.

It hurts more than you know,
To hear you’re laboured breathing slow,
And there’s nothing I can do,

Through your Morphine sleep you mutter,
A cry for help you often utter,
And I do nothing for you.

Nothing but watch and wait and will,
Will for your chest to be still,
Wait for your breathing to stop,

Pray for your release though it pains me so,
It hurts just the thought of letting you go.
Trying to make the most of the time we’ve got.

Four nights without sleep, yet you slumber on,
Hated thoughts of the future with you gone,
Are you aware of me here?

I watch as you take your final breath,
And cry at the peacefulness of death,
It made no difference I was near.
