Musings on the nature of Valentines Day
For one day in every year our hearts are moved to care
and seek out sweet features of those who may yet gain our love.
Love blind as ever searching masks the truth of true devotion
behind a shield of paper flowers and passionate outflowings
in the hope that lesser passions are enough to foster truth.

On this day of all the days, when we shudder at the notion,
let loose rose red ribbons, flying banners of  hearfelt emotions
and stand coyly in the wings and await a fond reply.
And for those that receive nothing, another day to love decry.

If love was ever easy would we ever stop to try.

Love is nothing without caring and caring nothing without truth.
Devotion needs no valentine’s reminder if we all remove our masks
and declare our deepest feelings to the ones who hold our hearts
without fear of retribution, fear of losing our good grace.

Our fears largely unfounded if love is bound by truth
For only those more heartless, those undeserving of truths words
will cast aside the feelings of one brave enough to speak.

But we are only human, the bravest heart’s found wanting.

We wait the failing winter and the burdgeoning of spring
to extol coy heartfelt emotions on flying rose red ribbons,
bearing a shield of paper flowers and hiding behind a mask.
