I wrote this after attending my dance group where most of the members are elderly.
The Dancers

They know their steps by heart but still
they struggle round the floor,
Their weary legs have trod these boards
So many times before

They love their dances, every one
They never want to stop
They know that once they call a halt
Then that will be their lot.

Despite the aching muscles, they’re trying to stand tall
They have to be so careful,  they do not want to fall

It’s very hard to give it up,  although they know they should,
To swing and glide around the room, they really wish they could

It’s goodbye to an era, and what will take its place
Just sitting by the fireside and gazing into space

Don’t put away your dancing shoes and don’t you give up soon
I hope that when the end comes, you’ll be dancing to your favourite tune.
