A short poem about a little boy who is three.
Being Three
By: Cassandra Gadouas

Hello, it’s me, I am John and I am three.

It’s hard to be three. It is not what I really want to be.

I want to be big! Then I can be free. Then I can tell you what to do and you will have to listen to me!

I don’t like being told what to do. I am three not two!

I want to be boss and tell you what to do!

I can shout, scream, and cry, kick, hit, pinch, punch and spit. I can throw things, tear things, bite and squeeze.

I also know how to copy and tease.

It is fun to make you mad, it makes me glad.

I can wear my grumpy face and crumple up my nose.

I am mad cause I don’t get my way and what are you going to do?

Are you going to get a grumpy face too?

You get so upset with me you don’t know what to do, and I can see you don’t have a clue.

I am really just testing you.

I need my limits and I know I do, but it is fun to push to see what you will do.

Will you follow through?

Or will you finally give in and let me have my way?

I will remember and try again another day.

I will test again to see if you mean what you say.

I will also copy what you do and try it out on you.

I know I can’t always have my way, but sometimes it is hard to do what you say.

It is easier when we can play and share love and hugs.

But I am still learning so for awhile, you’ll still get the tugs.
